Should I apply a sealant/varnish after finishing?

Painting guidance for better coverage, smoother results, and finishing.

The short answer is: You don't have to, but we highly recommend it!

Because our kits use high-quality acrylic paint, your finished artwork will naturally be water-resistant and durable once it dries. However, applying a clear acrylic varnish (sealant) over your finished masterpiece is the ultimate "pro touch" for several wonderful reasons:

Why should you varnish your painting?

  • Even Finish: Because different paint pigments contain different ingredients, you might notice that some colors dry glossy (shiny) while others dry matte (flat). A coat of varnish unifies the entire canvas, giving it a beautiful, professional, and even finish.
  • Color Enhancement: Varnish acts like magic! It deepens the dark colors, brightens the light colors, and makes the entire painting "pop" with vibrancy.
  • Long-Lasting Protection: It seals the paint, protecting your hard work from dust, dirt, moisture, and UV rays (preventing the colors from fading over the years).

What kind of varnish should I use?
You can use any clear liquid acrylic varnish (available at any local craft store, or in our accessories collection!). They usually come in three finishes:

  1. Gloss (Shiny): Makes colors extremely vibrant and looks like a traditional oil painting.
  2. Matte (Flat): Removes all shine and glare. Best if you plan to hang the painting in a room with lots of direct sunlight or bright lights.
  3. Satin (Semi-gloss): A perfect middle ground. It gives a soft, natural glow without being too reflective.

How to apply varnish correctly (Crucial Steps!):

  1. WAIT! This is the most important step. Acrylic paint feels dry to the touch in minutes, but it takes time to cure underneath. Wait at least 1 to 2 weeks after finishing your painting before applying varnish. If you apply it too soon, the wet paint will smudge and ruin your artwork!
  2. Clean the canvas: Gently wipe the canvas with a dry microfiber cloth or a soft, clean brush to remove any dust or pet hair.
  3. Apply a thin layer: Use a clean, wide, flat brush. Dip it into the varnish and apply it in long, smooth, horizontal strokes from top to bottom.
  4. Don't over-brush: Do not scrub or repeatedly brush over the same area, as this can create cloudy white streaks. Let it dry completely (usually 24 hours).
