Don't worry if your canvas arrives with a few wrinkles or creases! To protect the canvas during international shipping and keep delivery costs down, canvases are sometimes folded or tightly rolled.
Because our canvases are made of high-quality cotton/linen blend, getting those creases out is very easy. It’s just like ironing a wrinkled shirt.
Here are the safest and most effective methods to flatten your canvas before you start painting:
Method 1: Ironing (Fastest & Most Effective)
This is the best way to get a perfectly smooth canvas.
- Place it face down: Place your canvas on an ironing board or a thick towel with the printed side (the side with the numbers) facing DOWN.
- Use a damp cloth: Place a slightly damp cloth or towel over the back of the canvas. This protects the fabric and adds just the right amount of moisture.
- Use Low/Medium Heat: Set your iron to a low or medium setting (the "Cotton" or "Linen" setting works well).
- Iron gently: Gently iron over the damp cloth. Keep the iron moving at all times to avoid burning the canvas.
- WARNING: Do not use the steam setting directly on the canvas, and NEVER iron the front side (the printed side), as heat and water can smudge the printed numbers and lines.
Method 2: The "Heavy Books" Method (No Iron Required)
If you don't have an iron, you can use the weight of heavy objects to flatten it out over time.
- Unroll or unfold your canvas completely.
- Place it face down on a clean, flat surface (like a dining table or the floor).
- Place heavy, flat items like large textbooks, dictionaries, or wooden boards evenly across the canvas, paying special attention to the creased areas.
- Leave it like this for 24 to 48 hours.
Method 3: Stretching and Taping
If you have a drawing board or a flat desk, you can stretch the canvas out.
- Pull the canvas tight and use masking tape or painter's tape to secure the four corners and edges to your desk or a hard board.
- Leave it taped down for a day or two. The tension will naturally pull the wrinkles out.
💡 Pro Painter’s Secret:
Even if there are a few minor creases left, don't stress! As you apply the water-based acrylic paint to the canvas, the fabric will slightly shrink and tighten. Once the entire painting is finished and the paint is fully dry, most minor wrinkles will completely disappear on their own!
