Support & Troubleshooting

My brushes are fraying, what should I do?

Practical help for paint, canvas, brushes, colors, and kit issues.

Because acrylic paint dries very quickly, it can sometimes build up near the base of the bristles, causing your brushes to stiffen, fray, or lose their sharp point. Heavy use can also cause the synthetic nylon bristles to bend out of shape over time.

Don't worry! You don't necessarily need new brushes. Here are the easiest and most effective ways to restore your brushes and keep them in perfect condition:

Method 1: The Hot Water Trick (To Reshape Bent Bristles)
Since the brushes included in our kits are made of high-quality synthetic nylon, heat can help them remember their original shape!

  1. Boil a small amount of water and pour it into a heat-safe mug. Let it cool for just a minute so it's hot but not boiling.
  2. Dip the bristles of the frayed brush into the hot water for about 5 to 10 seconds.
  3. Take the brush out and use your thumb and index finger to gently squeeze and pull the bristles back into a sharp point.
  4. Let the brush air dry flat on a paper towel. It should look almost brand new!

Method 2: The Quick Trim (For Stray Hairs)
If your brush has one or two stubborn stray hairs that refuse to go back into place and are messing up your tiny details:

  • Grab a pair of nail clippers or small cuticle scissors.
  • Carefully snip off the rogue hair as close to the metal ferrule (the metal part of the brush) as possible. Nail clippers give you the best control to avoid cutting the good bristles.

How to Prevent Fraying (Brush Care Tips):

  • Never let paint dry on the brush: Wash your brush completely with water immediately after you finish painting or before switching colors.
  • Don't leave brushes in water: Never leave your brushes resting face-down in your water cup. The weight of the brush will permanently bend the bristles, and the water will cause the wooden handle to crack and peel.
  • Glide, don't scrub: Apply the paint smoothly. Scrubbing or pushing the brush hard against the canvas will ruin the fine tip.

💡 Pro Tip for Serious Painters:
The brushes included in our kits are great "starter brushes." However, if you find yourself falling in love with Paint by Numbers and want perfect precision for those microscopic spaces, we highly recommend upgrading to a set of professional miniature detailing brushes (available at any local craft store or in our accessories section!).
