Custom Paint by Numbers: Photo Selection Tips

Does the lighting in my photo matter?

How to choose a photo that works well for a custom paint by numbers kit.

Yes, absolutely! In fact, lighting is the single most important factor for a beautiful custom kit.

While a dark, moody photo might look amazing on your bright smartphone screen, it will not translate well into a physical painting. Here is why: Our design software is very literal. It reads the exact colors in your photo's pixels and matches them to paint colors. It cannot "guess" what is hiding in the shadows.

If a photo is badly lit, the software will generate dark, muddy, or unnatural paint colors. To get a vibrant and realistic painting, please pay attention to these lighting rules:

❌ Avoid These Lighting Mistakes:

  • Harsh Shadows (The "Two-Face" Effect): If the sun is only shining on one side of a person's face, the other side will be in deep shadow. On a canvas, the software will turn that shadow into dark brown, grey, or even weird green/purple paint blocksAlways choose photos with even lighting across the face!
  • Nighttime or Dark Photos: If the photo was taken at night or in a dim room, your painting will be mostly black and dark grey. All the beautiful details (like eyes and hair texture) will completely disappear into the darkness.
  • Overexposed (Too Bright): If the flash was too close or the sun is directly behind the subject (backlighting), the face might look washed out and completely white. You will end up painting a large, blank white area with no facial features.
  • Color Filters: Please turn off Instagram or Snapchat filters! If the photo has a warm yellow tint or a cool blue filter, the software will think the person's skin is actually yellow or blue, and will provide paint colors to match.

✅ The Perfect Lighting:
The absolute best photo for a Paint by Numbers kit is taken outdoors in natural, soft daylight (like on a cloudy day or in the shade), or indoors facing a large, bright window. This ensures natural skin tones and allows the camera to capture every gorgeous detail!
