Custom Paint by Numbers: Photo Selection Tips

Requirements for Pet Photos

How to choose a photo that works well for a custom paint by numbers kit.

We know that your pets are family! Creating a custom Paint by Numbers of your furry best friend is one of the most popular choices in our store.

However, animal fur and pet features can be very tricky for our design software to process. To ensure your pet painting looks like a beautiful piece of art and not a cartoonish blob, please follow these specific rules for pet photos:

1. 📸 Get Down on Their Level (Eye-Level Close-Ups)

  • The Best Angle: Crouch down so your camera is at your pet's eye level. The photo should focus mainly on their face and chest.
  • Avoid: Please do not take photos from a human's standing height looking down at the pet.
  • Multiple Pets? Match the canvas size to the number of pets so every face stays detailed — 1 pet: 12×16″ (30×40cm); 2–3 pets: 16×20″ (40×50cm); 4 or more: 20×24″ (50×60cm) or larger. (We use these same sizes across all our custom photo guides.)"

2. ☀️ The "Black Pet" & "White Pet" Lighting Rules
Lighting is the #1 reason a pet portrait succeeds or fails.

  • For Black / Dark Pets: They must be photographed in bright, natural daylight. If a black dog is in the shade, the camera only captures a dark silhouette. The software will simply generate a massive black paint block with zero fur texture or facial features.
  • For White / Light Pets: Be careful of color reflections! If your white dog is sitting on bright green grass in the sun, their white belly will reflect the green light. The software will literally give you green paint for your dog's fur. Try to photograph them indoors near a window or on a neutral-colored background.

3. 🔍 Sharp Eyes & Fur Texture
The eyes are the soul of your pet portrait! Please ensure the photo is in high resolution and perfectly in focus. If you zoom in on the photo and your pet's eyes look blurry or their fur looks muddy, it will look exactly the same on the canvas.

4. 🎨 Why the 48-Color Upgrade is a Game Changer for Pets
Pet fur is incredibly complex. A Golden Retriever isn't just "yellow"—their fur contains dozens of shades of gold, brown, cream, and white.

  • A standard 24-color kit will group these shades together, making the fur look slightly blocky.
  • We highly recommend the 48-Color Upgrade for pets. The extra 24 colors allow for ultra-smooth transitions, making the fur look soft, fluffy, and highly realistic.

Want to remove a messy background?
A messy living room in the background can distract from your beautiful pet. Consider using our Background Removal Service (available on the product page) to replace the messy background with a solid, elegant color!
